PRIX MNEMO 2000 : Vision of a society by the traditionnal oral song at tragic and epic caracter.

By Conrad Laforte and Monique Jutras.

Mme Carmelle Bégin, an ethnomusicologist with the Canadian Museum of Civilization and Mr Jacques Gagné of Disques Tout Crin have received the first Mneno Prize for their production Jean Carignan - Archives (a three disk CD boxed set, with a 26 page booklet). This production was chosen by the jury for the Prix Mneno (M. Jean Duberger, Mme Elisabeth Gagnon, M. Normand Legault) for its steadfast production procedure, its quality texts, its solid marketing, its research concerning the repertoire, for its respectful approach in dealing with family members, for the elegance of the product, because it adresses a large public, and because it honours a great interpretor who is a legend in music and dance circles.

The Mnemo prize aims to reward and highlight a production which is considered exceptional in the field of documentation or research pertaining to dance, music, storytelling or traditional song of Quebec. The following is a critical analysis by Éric Favreau which appeared in our Bulletin in January 1999, and who had then noted errors and omissions which have been corrected for the second edition.
